The Founder of Sahaja Yoga, Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, teaches that true peace is not found in the outside world but within ourselves. According to her precious teachings and discourses, the main principles for establishing peace within the mind are as follows:
1. Kundalini Awakening and Thoughtless Awareness
Shri Mataji says that the constant chatter of our minds and the endless flow of thoughts disturb our peace. When the Kundalini energy awakens, thoughts become quiet, and te mind enters a state of thoughtless awareness (a state beyond thoughts). This is the first state from which true peace begins.
2. Living in the Present
Our attention often wanders into memories of the past or worries about the future. This disturbs our peace of mind. By keeping our attention in the present moment, we can experience greater peace and mental calmnes
3. Adopting the Witness State
When you go deeper into meditation, the restlessness of your attention comes to an end. You begin to observe the whole world and the situations in your life as a witness (Sakshi Bhava), without becoming disturbed or emotionally entangled in them.
4. Turning Inwards (Go Within)*
Shri Mataji has a very beautiful message that even while talking to others or doing external worldly work, you should keep your attention inside. If you become thoughtless before talking to anyone, then you get established in the ocean of peace and descend into the heart of the person in front of you.
*5. Giving up Hatred and Complete Surrender*
Peace can never be attained by keeping hatred or ego in the mind. One should always keep the feeling of love and forgiveness in the heart. When a seeker, without dividing his desires, has only the pure desire to attain that Supreme Power (Parmatma), then his entire existence automatically becomes pure and balanced.
The clear message of Mataji, who has shown the path of meditation to lakhs of people, is that until you attain Self-Realization and establish your connection with that all-pervading Power, true peace of mind is not possible.
